Limerick: a five-line nonsense poem with the rhyme scheme aabba and a syllable count of 9, 9, 6, 6, and 9.
I have always really enjoyed limericks. They're funny and short, and, I had always thought, would be pretty easy to write. That opinion changed as I tried to write these! The syllable count was quite difficult to coordinate. It was tough to make a poem that both made sense, rhymed according to the specified scheme, and had the correct syllable count, too!
There wasn't one specific inspiration that led me to write these poems. I think it was mainly experimentation - when I had a good 9-syllable first line, I chose my second line to end with a rhyming word, and worked from there. I didn't start with the intention to write a limerick about either of the topics I chose.
I think I mostly like the humor of the poems. I think that they also have a bit of the unexpected in them. I hope you will enjoy reading them as much as I enjoyed writing them!
